Marlborough District Libraries are proud to support the Marlborough Book Festival 2024.
This year's Marlborough Book Festival features 23 sessions with 17 wonderful authors speaking at the Blenheim’s ASB Theatre Marlborough, Marlborough Library at Te Kahu o Waipuna & Small Town Winery.
It's going to be a fabulous weekend of inspiring, informative and entertaining conversations. You don't need to be a book reader to love a book festival.

The Team that Hit the Rocks
Peter Jerram in conversation with Nikki Macdonald
Retired Marlborough veterinarian and author Peter Jerram discusses his compelling memoir The Team that Hit the Rocks. In April 1968, the inter-island passenger ferry Wahine hit Barrett Reef at the entrance to Wellington Harbour in New Zealand’s worst recorded storm. Six and a half hours later the ship heeled over and sank, with the eventual loss of 53 lives. Just a few weeks into his first year at university, Peter was on board with his Lincoln College cricket team mates. He has written a riveting first hand account and investigated the tragedy to ask serious questions of the Court of Inquiry that followed.

Emily Perkins in conversation with Nikki Macdonald
Novelist, screenwriter, creative writing teacher and reality TV fan, Emily has won NZ Book of the Year twice, as well as Best First Book of the Year and the UK’s Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize, and been longlisted for the Women’s Prize. She was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to literature in 2017. Emily reflects on her writing life in conversation with Nikki Macdonald.

The Chimes
Anna Smaill in conversation with Tania Miller
We couldn’t let the chance pass us by - to hear Anna Smaill discuss her 2015 masterpiece The Chimes while she was in town for the 2024 Marlborough Book Festival. The highly original story is set in a futuristic London where a musical instrument, the carillon, casts a mass amnesia over much of the population. The novel explores questions as relevant today as they were in 2015 such as: what happens if we lose the ability to tell stories? And what happens if we answer the question “who are we?” with a single answer?
