New Zealand String Quartet Free Taster Session at Te Kahu o Waipuna

The New Zealand String Quartet (NZSQ) is excited to return to Marlborough next month with a variety of performances in the region. This year, with their 2024 season Soundscapes, the NZSQ is shaking things up with a series of smaller regional tours in place of their usual national tour. This allows the quartet to spend more time in each location and offer a variety of concerts to suit every taste, from seasoned chamber music enthusiasts to curious newcomers.

The NZSQ has curated a series of events for Marlborough audiences:

  • Friday, May 17th (7.30pm): This concert marks a joyful return to the Picton Little Theatre, a year after their sold-out performance on the Arts on Tour circuit in 2023. The programme features music by Haydn, Debussy, and NZ composer Leonie Holmes.
  • Saturday, May 18th (11.30am): Relax and enjoy a free family-friendly concert at Te Kahu o Waipuna. This "NZSQ Encounters" performance offers a series of short pieces in a relaxed atmosphere, perfect for introducing young ears to the wonders of chamber music.
  • Saturday, May 18th (7.30pm): The NZSQ performs in the Whitehaven Room of the ASB Theatre in Blenheim for an evening performance showcasing works by Claire Cowan, Shostakovich, and Brahms. This concert is generously supported by Whitehaven Wines.
  • Sunday, May 19th (12.30pm TBC): The final Marlborough event is a relaxed community performance at Waikawa Marae. Bring the whānau and a picnic to learn more about the NZSQ musicians, the whakapapa of their instruments, their long history of collaborating with taonga pūoro, and hear an array of chamber music, including a piece that was inspired by birdsong in the Marlborough Sounds.

Duncan Mackenzie, Community Learning & Engagement at Te Kahu o Waipuna says:

“Marlborough District Libraries is thrilled to collaborate with the New Zealand String Quartet. We’re particularly grateful for the no-cost ‘taster’ session planned for Te Kahu o Waipuna which is a continuation of our drive to offer new experiences to our community”

Don't miss this exciting opportunity to experience the magic of the New Zealand String Quartet in the heart of Marlborough.
