Te Kahu o Waipuna - Rising from the ground

To celebrate the one year anniversary, we present Te Kahu o Waipuna - rising from the ground!

Over 730,000 images have been compressed into a 13-minute video, showing Marlborough’s new combined library and art gallery building.

The foundations began to take shape on 11 August 2020, in the middle of Covid Level 2 restrictions. Over the next two and half years, the new library and art gallery was built. Construction was completed by May 2023 and the new facility was officially opened six weeks later on 30 June.

Since opening, the library and art gallery have become enormously popular, with nearly 430,000 visitors through the doors in its first year of operation. This is a doubling of patronage - an increase of 112% in visitors - compared to the former library building.

Thank you to everyone who has come in to use the new facilities in its first year!

Special thanks to architects Warren and Mahoney, Robinson Construction and the hundreds of subcontractors who worked tirelessly on the project.

Te Kahu o Waipuna won three awards at the Master Builders Association Commercial Project Awards in May 2024 - Gold Award Winner and Category Winner in the Tourism and Leisure Category; and Value Award Winner in the Commercial Projects $10 to $25M Category. It also won the public architecture category at the Te Kāhui Whaihanga New Zealand Institute of Architects Local Awards in June 2024.
